Shops, banks, hotels and saloons clustered along Montana and Minnesota avenues near the depot, which once straddled Broadway at the tracks.  Commercial and residential development pressed north and west around the turn of the 20th century. Broadway opened to through traffic after a new depot was built in 1909 four blocks to the east.
