Endangered Properties

Orson N. Newman Farm

South Frontage Road – Billings, MT

This house and outbuildings were on the farm of Orson N. Newman, an early settler who homesteaded along the Yellowstone River four years before Billings was established in 1882.  The Newman home was near a ford in the Yellowstone River and was notably a social gathering spot for early area residents.  An old log cabin formerly on the property was transformed into Billings' first schoolhouse, the original Newman School, in 1879.

Pending demolition, if not able to relocate, to make way for a housing development.

Joseph Zimmerman House

1501 Zimmerman Trail – Billings, MT

This farmhouse, built circa 1904, was home to Joseph Zimmerman, an early Billings’ sheep rancher who, with his brother Frank Zimmerman, built the Zimmerman Trail through the rimrocks in 1890.

Pending demolition, if not able to relocate.

Proposed site of Ace Hardware building and parking lot.
